Mileage from tyres

Post by nick280 » Tue May 20, 2014 1:13 pm

Hello,

I did a quick search but couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for which is a thread with peoples mileage and experience of tyres they are using on the SMT. I dont know if this will work but thought I'd start one.

So I thought a simple format as follows

Bridgestone BT023
120/70/17 front
180/55/17 GT spec rear
Mixed riding - 75% Spirited Touring - 25% Mental Blasts
Front - **** miles
Rear - **** miles

I only ask as I have BT023's on mine and the bike is coming up to 3k miles with them and I do think they are fantastic but the rear is now nearly worn out, possibly get another 500 miles out of them, maybe 1000 if lucky and I'd have thought they would have lasted longer. Front still like new.

Maybe the SMT eats rear tyres?

Please add your mileage and experiences.

Could possibly make a sticky?

Cheers Guys & Gals.

Bridgestone BT023
120/70/17 front
180/55/17 standard rear
Mixed riding - 85% - fast road - 15% - 2 up tootling about
Front - 8000 miles
Rear - 4000 miles

I usually change mine early as I have a theory that goes like this.

If I change the rear tyre as soon as it starts 'white lining' rather than waiting for it to hit the wear limit, because of this I probably buy an extra tyre every 4 years. With the cost of a rear BT023 at £135 this strategy costs me £2.81 a month which I think is a small price to pay to have prime handling all the time, rather than having the bike fall into corners off the edge of a squared of tyre !

I do much the same - cross-town commuting squares off the rear something chronic, and I change it when it starts to really screw up the handling. But I don't waste the old ones, I keep them in the garage and put them back on if it means I can align buying a new set with starting a big trip, rather than go away on part-worn rubber.

As to tyre life,

Conti SportAttack (OEMs), 2000 miles to completely bald rear
Conti TrailAttack 2, 10k miles from the front with 1mm left, 6k from the rear (punctured with ~2mm (3.6mm) tread left)
Michelin Pilot Road 3, 7k front, 4.5k rear until squared off with ~1mm left (2.6mm total)

Usage always varies. Sometimes commuting, sometimes ragging around this country, sometimes ragging around others, occasionally trundling gently to distant places. Hence not using the format.

Michelin Pilot road 3
All spirited riding, no commuting plus a 2600 mile trip to the Alps
Front 6000 miles and going strong
Rear replaced at 6000 miles

The tyres handle really well in all conditions

Bloody hell! You got 6k miles of spirited riding from a PR3 rear? That sounds like my kind of tyre :-D

I have got another 500 so far out of my BT023 rear but it has now gone hard and is spinning up quite easily. The flat spot has gone and the ware indicators are quite evenly matched across the width. Might get another 500 yet

My tire mileage is abysmal. 1500-2500 on the rear if running a sport tire depending on how badly I abuse them. 3500-4000 on the rear running D616 with a mix of on and off-pavement riding.

I may break down and get a set of PR3's, Roadsmart II's or something similar. The tire money between dirt bikes, street bikes, and a track bike is putting a serious dent in my wallet. :(

I fitted the new rear tyre on Monday. I got 4027 miles from the BT023 GT rear (probs slightly on the illegal side of legal lol) with 80% touring 15% fast road and 5% brain out riding. I'm pleased with that and the front looks like it may do another rear

Got just shy of 2k from a Maxxis supermax. Stuck like shit to a blanket, but abysmal mileage. Just stuck a pair of PR3s on, let's see how they get on :D

All spirited riding , but takin care not to accelerate too hard all the time

Conti road attack 2 2500'rear 4500 front liked the feel and grip

Michelin pr3 3500 rear front 5 k felt insecure esoecially when worn

Dunlop sportsmart 3000 rear 7000 front and the rear doesn't square off , awesome tyre feels like I could push it really hard , ist rear lasted 3500 with no touring or two up

I've got a set of those in the garage. 120/70 and 190/50. I did 7 trackdays on them, plus some road miles, so probably the thick end of a thousand miles, all in and the fuckers refused to wear. Still got 4mm of tread all over, front and rear.

Keep meaning to ebay them, but I'm just too lazy to weigh them and work out what they'll cost to post.

6000 miles out of previous PR3 rear and 9000 out of front, although it was at it's limit.

Currently got 3500 miles on current PR3 rear but have recently fitted new PR4 to front. The bike seems to struggle turning in so may have to swap to PR4 rear a bit earlier than planned. It seems to have flat spotted much quicker than before. Not enough corners then!

That must be a bit of a record for a SMT. :o
You definitely need to be doing a bit more cornering ! :D & proper SMT style
I don't even get that tyre mileage on my 125 scooter. (Well not much more)

Just come back from my annual Alps trip, another 2600 miles and the front is ready to be replaced ( it's completely knackered). That's 9000 miles for the front tyre. I've had a Pilot road 4 on the back for 3000 miles and it's got plenty of wear left in it.
