Thought I would give another kick at this thread as now it would seem a third option has emerged. From what I can understand, for someone wanting to get their SMt a little dirty (and avoid the cost of trading for a 1190) you could install the mt60's, the distanzas or now the Karoo 3's. I am still leaning toward the mt60's, but they only do a 160 profile in the rear. Reviews on the net seem to indicate this install is not a problem. I gotta shite or get off the pot on this one as the sync's are pretty much toast. Hopefully enough tread left for my first track day of the season in a Calabogie

The mt60 was my first choice before finding out the back isn't suggested. I went with the d616 for an o coming trip to Alaska. Haven't put enough miles for a verdict yet. Plan was to replace the reader right before the trio if I looked them but now that they are discontinued you can't find them. So now I don't know if I want to replace with a matching set of something else or just a different rear tire.

I had a Buell Uly a few years back, bought the first one in my area. It came stock with the 616's I believe. Good tire, but the front end would weave all over the place, pretty scary above 120kph. I know on the Buell forum a couple of guys used Avon distanzas to replace the Dunlops. This tire came only in 160 size, they had no issues replacing the 180 on the Uly. I think the Sycs are just as good as the 616's and handled better IMHO. I am quite tempted to try the Avons and air them down a bit for the dirt, or the Karoo 3's. In both cases I would have to use a more narrow tire......

I looked at the distanzas but didn't see anything over 160 size. The Karoo's don't have a front but a 170 rear should fit. I thought about those too but the 2500 mile trip before we even see dirt roads would not be to fun.

As soon as you commit to trying a 160 rear, there seem to be more possibilities. There is also the Pirelli MT-60R, a super mot tire that has good reviews.
