Cheap topbox for smt

Post by Rakamora » Sat Apr 29, 2017 10:50 pm

Hello, does anybody know of a cheap easy detachable top box for the ktm 990 smt-13. I have the "plate" top box mount in the rear.

If you want it to be quickly removable, you'll have to go with Givi or Shad and install their adapter plate.
Not sure if that meets your definition of "cheap"...but cheaper than the SMT Gobi Top box rack/box price!

Okey thx, givi seems to be what most people buy. If i buy their plate how easy removable is it?
Is it like wrench and 5 min or just hands and seconds?

It´s easy! Not more than 5 minutes with 5 mm Allen key.
This is the plate I´m talking about:

(Det är jätteenkelt! Tar knappast längre tid än 5 minuter med 5 mm sexkantnyckel.)

Of course! Just turn the key a quarter of a turn and then lift the box up and out!
Easy as steeling candy from a baby! 8-)

Givi, Shad or similar plastic top boxes remove with just the same key that locks them.

The mounting plates usually come off with 4 screws. How easy/hard it is to get to the screws depends on model/brand.

You shouldn't ever "need" to remove the Plate, just the box itself, as the supplied plates from Givi/Shad are basically flat like the stock plate, with 3-4 bumps that stick up to mount/lock the box in place.

Okey so that plate mounts directly on to the original plate?

I have a small Givi top box on the mounting plate. It also doubles as a pannier using the Givi QR pannier mounting frame. So, for short away trips I use the top box, then for longer tours I mount it as a side pannier with another identical box I store in the cupboard.

Just a word on top boxes. There is a tendency to fill them up with increasing amounts of stuff to the point that they can be very heavy. The KTM rack and subframe aren't exactly known for their carrying capacity, so, go careful.

Personally, for everyday run outs I use a small tailback which takes the bare essentials -disc lock, visor cleaner, puncture repair outfit, compressor/puncture repair outfit, first aid kit, torch and a few bits of spares/insulating tape/Ty wraps, waterproof over trousers, phone. It discourages me from carrying multiple pairs of gloves, alternative outers for the Halvarssons suit and a plethora of other crap I don't really need but the space encourages me to carry.

You won't need to take it off, it looks fine on the bike and after you get done mounting it, I guarantee you won't ever want to go through the experience a second time. It's far harder to fit than to remove. The spacers are an absolute bastard.

Do a bit of searching for the plate. I got mine really cheaply in an M and P sale because it was silver not black. That saved me about £40. Also, not sure if it is still possible given exchange rates, but the pannier carrier and panniers I bought from Germany for half what I would have paid in the UK even with postage.
