Sneaky luggage idea

Post by Thirdway » Thu Apr 24, 2014 10:09 am

My bike didn't come with the soft panniers so I needed luggage. I find that a top box is big enough for a few days in the highlands and saves the weight/width of two panniers when filtering.

I was about to push the button on a set of Givi luggage when I realised they do a 40 litre pannier that doubles as a top box. So, for longer trips I can use a pair of panniers on their QD frame, then get rid of the frame and use the Givi top box mounting plate for mounting one pannier as a top box.

Cost: £200 for panniers, £120 for frame and £90 for the top box mount- that came yesterday and is quite a work of art solid aluminium, anodised, etched in Givi badge. That's less than a Ventura frame and Aero Spada pack !

I had a look at the Trax stuff and the Givi Trekker, but its expensive and often takes a few knocks and bangs. The cheaper plastic cases are very robust, easily hold the 10Kg max load and do the job very well. I have a more dedicated, but smaller Givi system on the ST4s and it has been brilliant for two up touring.

Thought this might save someone spending out on a dedicated top box and gets a cheap, easily removal luggage system for just North of £400 - I bought the panniers from a German motorcycle website for £99 each plus £7 delivery.

Solid Aluminum? The mounting frame or the cases themselves? I would like to see a few pictures if you wouldn't mind. Thanks!

Just the plate. Not sure how you add pictures directly on this forum. Usually I can add as attachment without trailing through a hosting site.

Another luggage option to consider if you dont want to go the hard luggage route is the Kriega system
I used a set on our circum-navigation of Zimbabwe last year, in conjunction with a set of Oxfords, they strap on ultra securely and do not hang off the side of the bike
the best option would be 2 x kriega US20 + 2 x Kriega US10 that'll give you 60L of luggage space

The Kriega's are on the rear rack (with some other random pics)
