1195 RC8R engine into 990SMR

Post by Alon » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:00 pm

I've been pondering whether to invest time and money into my 990SMR engine or consider an engine swap with an RC8R engine. I know this has been done on the 990 adventures and based on that bike's chassis and fuel tanks, it seems like a big job but in looking at my SMR and considering how much I love the bike (but want more performance), here what I'm thinking in terms of this potential swap:
1- using a 2010/2011 RC8R single plug engine so I don't have to fuss with different ignition/ecu components
2- there is no front frame obstruction on the SMR as with the 990adv and from what I've read, the rear of the engine bolts right into the 990 series frames and the chain lines up as well as the swingarm bolt, etc.
3- I'd probably have to fabricate the front upper engine mounts
4- I'd like to reuse my 990 fuel injection (yes, I know the RC8R has larger throttle bodies and a different air box but if I use my 990smr injection, I would end up running a power commander with dyno tuned map)
5- I'd like to not have to use the RC8 dash and ecu - I'd like to use my 990smr electronics
6- I have no idea currently if my 990smr exhaust will bolt onto RC8R heads - I would like to use my 990smr exhaust system
7- I do not see any clearance issues related to the RC8R oil cooler - unlike the Adventure, my fuel tank and exhaust are not in the way of that cooler on the right side of the engine
8- I realize that the RC8R uses a larger radiator and have looked at its dimensions compared to the 990smr rad - it seems physically possible to swap them but I'd rather try to run my 990smr radiator with dual fans. I'm not sure how cooling plumbing varies between the two bikes and their respective radiators
So in the end, what I'm hoping to try to accomplish is a 2010/2011 RC8R engine using my 990smr exhaust system, my 990smr fuel injection and ecu, an open element air filter (no air box) and a power commander with a custom map. Of course with the 990 injection and exhaust I don't expect full RC8R power but the power commander and custom tune should get me very close I suspect. In either case, I'm betting on greater performance compared to a finely tuned 990smr power plant. I figure you can't beat displacement and the RC8R has some amazing heads and camshaft designs compared to the 990.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm missing or have overlooked? No, I don't want a Superduke 1290 and I've had an RC8R; loved it but I prefer the comfort and attitude of my 990smr.

Hi Alon
Wondered how you're getting on with this, are you still going to try to push on with this project?
