Oops - Oh Shit

Post by specs » Tue May 03, 2011 12:06 am

Unfortunately I had one of those "Shit, this is going to hurt!" experiences today. No video but the bike and myself ended up in a field, the bike having gone through a hawthorn hedge and I did a poor impersonation of Superman going over it. Fair bit of damage to the bike and another bad back and sore foot for me. At least I can say I walked away from it.

Many thanks to Dawn and Dean for taking care of me and for the ride home. I owe you.

Cause? Gravel in the road caused the front to wash out and a strong cross wind didn't help either. Maybe 10 mph too quick - as the recovery driver joked?

Other than that a wonderful day out :D

Ouch  but you walked away from it. A bent bike can be repaired or replaced.
Looking at the photo it could have been worse,(sorry) with you missing both the telegraph pole and building.
Hopefully it has not put you off and you will be back.
Somewhere in mid Wales?

There is a lot of gravel on minor rural roads as a result of cheaper repairs when the road is dressed repaired with tar oil layed with loose gravel pressed ontop. But there is always loose gravel left over.

Hastings Direct apparently use their own prefered dealers. Not too sure about that. I'll check it out in the morning. I'd prefer a KTM dealer to do the work.

Could have been a lot worse - Glad you are ok!!!

I think you have the right to take it to any dealer for repair? but at the end of the day all parts replaced will be genuine KTM anyway.

Hasting today say that I was given the wrong information yesterday it seems. Should have recovered it to wherever I chose.

In the first picture the bike is actually in the field pointing the wrong way so it must have flipped over. I was bloody lucky. I'm still trying to unravel the sequence of events in my head, but it all happened so quickly. :?

Nice hole in the hedge! Maybe that wire fence didn't help matters?

Glad you're okay and I hope it isn't too long before the bike is mended and on the road again...

Have just spoken with Mounter and it seems he;s recommending that the bike is written off - beyond economical repair. Subframe damage lots of Tupperware and exhaust need to be replaced and so on. He reckons the frame might also be slightly bent. It will cost what with the insurance excess and the depreciation due to the mileage. Ah well, shit happens. At least I'm in one piece. Bruised back and pelvis, and a few assorted bruises here and there.

Ouch....sorry to hear that, fingers crossed you're not out of pocket by too much!

May be a tad early to ask but what's next, same again or something else?

There's been a lot of this surface dressing going on around my way.....it's an absolute joke for people on 2 wheels and is typical of the short sighted local authorities....they'll have to redo the surface before they know it (or should anyway), instead they should have done a proper job in the first place. Rant over!

How's the bike situation looking specs?

The bike is dead, total write off. About £2400 down the drain including an excess of £925. It's been no bike for the last month because I'd just flogged an old K100LT I had. The back and shoulder have been pretty sore but I'm flying out to Florida to join a ship tomorrow hoping that I won't have to do too much heavy work for a while. Still it was a good 3,500 miles in just under two months. ;)

I'm undecided as to what I'll get when I return home in October. Maybe another SMT, or if there are any left the Adventure Dakar appeals. There again it could be something completely different.

Welcome back. :D Another bike from Mounters I suspect.
Grap a bit of this late summer heatwave to run it in before it all goes wet and autumnal.
Watch out for the gravel (you obviously will be) as there seems to be resufaceing roadworks on going everywhere at the moment, even more than usual.(I have just come back from northern France on my other bike and they had the same loose gravel on road repair patches aswell).
