My SMT's dubious superlative

Post by Motoproponent » Mon Nov 27, 2017 3:53 pm

Good Morning All,

After the new year my beloved SMT will be on the block for sale. Bay Area Hipsters being what they are, I am working on the marketing technique for the for sale advert.

I will be listing it as the highest mileage SMT on the internet!!!. This is easily true based on the current listings for sale. Just checking to see if I'll need some qualifiers.

Highest mileage in North America? Highest mileage in California? In the western hemisphere?

Anyway it's got 120,000 kilometers on the clock now (75,000 miles for us non-metric knuckle draggers)

Anyone got a higher number on their odo?

I'll be getting a used low mileage 1190 ADV.

I obviously do a lot more of the "T" than the "SM" so I want more long range capabilities. More carrying capacity, longer range, etc. Plus the ADV has more units sold so there is a lot more aftermarket support and a greater wealth of how to on the intertubez

Good move. That's exactly what I did and for exactly the same reasons. Sold the SMT (only 18000 miles on mine) and bought a mint 2015 1190S with under 3K on the clock. Haven't regretted it for a second. The 1190 has got under my skin just like the SMT did. I've become deeply attached to mine and in many ways I find it more rewarding to ride than my 1290 Duke. In fact, whisper it quietly, but I may yet sell the Superduke next year and concentrate on the 1190, probably treating it to a full Arrow decat system, a Rotweiller and a remap..

The power, easy thrust and extra space and comfort make the 1190 a league apart from the SMT when it comes to covering miles but its still got that old school KTM agility that the 990s have. It seriously surprises a lot of people on theoretically faster bikes the way it eats up bends.

The standard seat is a plank. The Powerparts one is miles better and mine seems to have got better with use. I also fitted the headlight mask and screen from the 1290 SA which is also a huge improvement over the original.
