Re: Considering an SMT
So that stupid sticker on the tank telling you to read the manual before riding... it's still on my tank (only had the bike a short while.
I'm guessing that should come off really easily then?

Re: Considering an SMT
Aye they will come off soon enough
Had no time to ride the bloody thing since picking it up. I'm either at work or the weather is awful. And now it's about that time of the year where the council pour 15 million tonnes of salt on the roads.
Still haven't took the baffles out of the Wings exhausts either, bet it sounds epic. I am a bit worried the flashing immobiliser light will kill the battery quicker than I'm used to.

Re: Considering an SMT
Those things usually only flash for a little while after stopping to let you know it's active. Leave it a bit and it won't be flashing. My 13 plate has hazard lights and that button stays glowing red for a while after ignition off. Just one of those built in things.Irn-Bru wrote:Aye they will come off soon enoughHad no time to ride the bloody thing since picking it up. I'm either at work or the weather is awful. My old faultistrada immobiliser flash would stop after about 15 mins.

Yes. They only flash when you're in the garage to cause you unnecessary anxiety the sneaky bastards.
With a good battery I charge once a month and its fine.

Re: Considering an SMT
I'm pretty sure it flashes constantly, unless it has some sort of sensor to detect movement, I lifted the cover off the other day and it defo was flashing every 15 or 30 seconds.
More than likely I'll get a lithium ion battery for it either way, a nice easy weight saving upgrade I like to do to all my bikes these days as the prices keep dropping.

(Pic taken from another thread where some poor sod had his lithium catch on fire. Bike unattended and not on trickle charge).

Re: Considering an SMT
The bike fired right up after not being used for a few weeks without issue so not something I'll be needing to worry about. Still haven't been able to ride it since buying, the roads around here and icy or salted to death so meh I'll wait.
In the mean time I've got an Oberon clutch slave for the added bling and now I'm looking into screens.
Has anyone tried the bigger Puig screen? I'm around the 6 foot mark so the stock one is a bit hopeless.
I was ringing around to get quotes for the major service it's due, one of them wanted nearly £600 for it
found one that'll do it for £350 in the end, and who also have a good reputation.
Edit: I was also wondering what people do for a belly pan/skid plate, the engine seems a bit exposed.

Re: Considering an SMT
Best screen I've found is the Palmer.
Not cheap with the adjustable bracketry biut it works.
Puig and Givi screens are little different to the KTM Touring screen. I tried one of those and the noise and turbulence was terrible.

Re: Considering an SMT
I've got the larger KTM touring screen (I'm 6ft too). Don't bother with that one as you just get a deafening roar from the wind. I'll be going for the proven palmer products screen eventually but it is expensive for screen.Irn-Bru wrote:The bike fired right up after not being used for a few weeks without issue so not something I'll be needing to worry about. Ignore the cold, I'll be out on mine tomorrow doing a couple of hundred miles. Heated grips and some warm gear and you're good to go.
I've been wondering if adventure engine plates will mount right on the SMT. Agree that it looks very exposed.

Re: Considering an SMT
Damn that Palmers one is expensive, £160ish for the full set up, seems a bit odd style wise too. Adjustablility would be nice. The Puig one with one of those bolt one extention things would push that set up to around £110 I guess.
I've seen bash plates on ebay for around £150 so yeah, this could get expensive

Re: Considering an SMT
That Puig one is basically what I have. A bolt on wind deflector MAY work but I'm unwilling to spend £70 odd on one to test. I would rather spend it on a Palmer that I know works ( @Gimlet has one).
At the moment I just turn up my music on the motorways.

Re: Considering an SMT
I use earplugs so it's not the noise that bothers me just the buffeting. I plan on touring when the weather improves, so really I'd have the stock screen on mostly unless on a trip. I don't mind riding in the cold but I hate how much salt they use on the roads here. My favourite roads have a lot of snow and ice too, so probably not a wise idea to get used to a 1000 vtwin in such conditions.
I've give that thread a read cheers, I don't have much luck with searing on this forum, must be doing something wrong. I hate when people ask questions that have been asked many times in the past like I'm doing basically

Re: Considering an SMT
Sorry JH. I meant to post a pic of the Palmer but I forgot.
There's a couple here. Not great but you get the idea.
I was too tight to pay the extra tenner to have the brackets powder coated black but I think it would look better if I had.
Don't worry about the baffle blade. I haven't got one and I've never had any rain or excessive draught coming up under the screen.

Re: Considering an SMT
Finally got to ride it today. It had been 3 weeks since the last time I put the battery maintainer on, and it didn't start
Oh well, battery wasn't completely dead and it's been sitting in the freezing cold so I don't mind.
Defo need to do something about the screen, the air seems to be hitting me in the neck more than anything. Did about 50 miles, local roads were quite greasy so wasn't too exciting, just an excuse to fully charge the battery I suppose. Currently got the long baffles in the Wings exhaust and is far too quiet I reckon so they need to come out.
