Differences between years?

Post by Hallstar » Thu Apr 28, 2016 10:02 pm

Hi guys,

I am new to KTM having spent the last five years on Jap fours.

I currently have a 954 Fireblade (my third one) and while I have a lot of love for the bike, it is no longer suiting my needs and following a 600mile weekend in Wales last week, my body has decided that it is time for a change.

It was by sheer chance that I stumbled across the 990SMT and it has very quickly made an impact on me, to the point that I have considered nothing else.

I have a few questions to run past you all to help in my decision of which bike to seek out and purchase.

I understand that KTM ran the 990SMT from 2009-2013. Other than colour schemes, are there any actual differences across the years??

I am competent with a spanner and I have ascertained that they like a drop of oil quite frequently. That aside, what are the main known issues? Anything worth addressing as a matter of course, 'prevention is better than cure'.

Thanks in advance...

Hallstar.

2011 added ABS and a 12v power port in the dash. I think '13 added a rear shock preload adjuster, but I could be mistaken.

I think subframe was different after 2011 and this is a serious point if you plan to have luggage. If you search you can find out more details

I have read within another thread that there have been reports of subframes snapping from having topboxes fitted. Is this the reason for a revised subframe post 2011?

Follow the recommendations on tightening torque of all screw connections, which can be found in the owners manual!

I don't remember -- was the immobilizer added 2009 or 2010? Change on fail to the older SD (IIRC -- search the threads) computer.

Not aware of any particular oil problems. Computer tune, drain holes in the swing arm. Otherwise normal maintenance.
Mods: arrow exhaust, 2nd flies removed, plugged air injection caps, JC30-80 air filter, 44T sprocket, 80w high beam, short levers, weighted bar ends, Rox risers, remapped ecu, heated grips, horn, radiator screen, crash bar, skid plate, backrest.
