Post by Itchyring » Tue Nov 02, 2010 8:05 pm

Greetings to all,
Having taken advantage of the VAT free promotion here in the UK, I have now taken delivery of a SILVER SMT complete with Belly pan, Black Alu panniers and Quick lock frames all supplied by The KTM Centre in Hertfordshire, first class customer service from Jason, Mark and Jack.

I realize that VAT is a form of tax but what exactly is this program you speak of. I ask only out of curiousity as I am from Canada. Is it an incentive to spend as I know of your and most all countries are broke now and if it is whom does it benefit? It can't benefit the gov as they need all the tax they can get their greedy hand on.

VAT is Value Added Tax it is a government tax on almost everything , currently 17.5%
KTM in the UK had deducted the equivalent vat for a month which ment a saving of £1500 on an SM-T :D
In Jan 2011 the government are increasing vat to 20%
Has Canada not been effected by the credit crunch? - it was reported here that Canada had gone back into recession.

Yes sir. We certainly have been affected by the crunch. All the way back to October 2008 now. As for myself personally, I work in manufacturing, steel specifically, and I was laid off work in early 2009 for 2 months. Now as you say the "r" word is rearing its ugly head again and there are some rumblings of a work reduction again. I don't worry to terribly much as being in my later fourties and being reasonably smart with my money, other than my motorcycle addiction, I have set myself up pretty good.
Canada is regarded often times, especially by our neighbour the United States, as a severely over taxed society with our tax in my province (HST) at 13%. Isn't special the names the feds give our taxes," Value added " and " Harmony" hence the H in HST. Whther it is government rhetoric or not I don't know but our feds have always maintained that we (Canada) our in a good position to weather the storm so to speak in comparison to say Britain, Europe, and the United States. Who knows though as I have little trust for any info spewed out by a politician.

Cheers for the welcome guys.

Must agree with you Dancerdave £10K for an SMT is rather over priced..!!!!!!! Glad KTM knocked the VAT off and my dealer did a great deal on the other bits.....

Picked the bike up 10days ago so still running in, just 200miles to go, so a trip to the Cotswolds should soon sort that,
then first service.!!!!

I didn't think 10K was too bad a price to pay for the SMT. It's not cheap but if you check out the Jap bikes now there's not a lot of price difference (Yamaha especially), then compare the quality of the parts, Brembo brakes, WP suspension etc and it looks a decent price. For example, the FZ1 Fazer is £10,500 new, more than the SMT and there's no way it's as well made and can justify that price tag in comparison.

However, I did get a load of extras thrown in at that price, free first service, KTM adventure paniers with inner bags and locks so saved myself about £800.
You always have a choice
