New SMC and SMT in 2021

Post by thebomby » Wed Jun 12, 2019 12:31 pm

Hi, haven't posted in ages and also have no idea where to post this except for here in the SMT/R forum. KTM is working on two new SMC/SMT models based on the 790 platform.

RideApart has some spy shots.

I for one am ecstatic that the SMT idea hasn't died out and will be revived. Should be an absolute ball with the new motors.

I think those new bikes will be great. It's amazing how much power you can get out of significantly smaller engines these days.

However, i've noticed that even though these smaller engines can pretty much match the hp numbers, they don't have the grunt of the larger engines.

My good friend had a ducati hypermotard 1100 (air cooled older gen motor), then traded it in for a newer one with a water cooled 821 more modern engine. The new one has the same hp and plenty of torque, but it doesn't just have the muscle all over the tach like the 1100 - and I suspect these newer 790s would be a similar story to the older 990s.

I'm sure they're awesome, and I am hoping to have a go on one sooner than later, but peak hp doesn't tell the whole story, I bet they don't FEEL as powerful.

How long has this 790 parallel twin design been out for now ?

Just a couple of years I think. This series (started with a duke) is the first to have this engine.

I've been saying this was coming ever since I heard they were making a 790 Duke. Was rather disappointed they made a more street-oriented version of the ADV with a 21" front wheel (was really expecting it to at least have a 19" front)

Test rode a 790 ADV before I picked up my SMT and it felt quite nice and peppy (though no match for my Kev'd out 990), I'm confident it'll be a nice addition to the orange line-up.

Of course, as unlikely as it is, what I'd really like is for them to hand the frame and engine over to the swedes to do their thing with like they did with the F800GS (which ended up as the amazing Nuda 900)
