Re: Draw through circuits

I have a 2011 SMT. If I leave it a couple of weeks it won't start. If I keep the battery topped up it's fine. These bikes need maximum charge to start. With regular use it's OK.

Re: Draw through circuits

Hoping to gain a bit of information from the group. I think I might have an electrical issue with my bike, it is often difficult to start on the cold mornings. I think the battery is draining while off. I have tested the charging, maintains about 14.4v across the rev range, so I think it is chargin...

Re: 990 Power Commander 5 & Tune ECU custom maps

Looks like the airbox drain. Fits on a small tube undertone bottom, middle , left of airbox. Goes down front of the engine sprocket cover.

Re: Sprocket question....

I've tried chain adjusted to the book and a bit tighter and slacker with only a slight difference noticeable. Very nervous about running on the tight side (transmission damage !). I'm just about to service the shocker and swing arm so I'm going to remove the shocker first and find out just what the ...

Re: Engine locking bolt

Absolutely agree about using a micrometer. Cali pers are just not accurate enough. Check your micrometers as well. Clean with a clean piece of paper between the anvils and check that they zero. One tiny piece of dirt can measure enough to make a difference. Hospital level of cleanliness if you want ...

Re: Sprocket question....

Which set up is best for eliminating chain slap - it's the single thing I have left to cure on this amazing bike and it drives me nuts sometimes. Best fix so far is earplugs - can't cure it with correct chain tension. When I test rode the 1290 SDR it was super smooth - wish I could get my SMT like t...

Re: Engine locking bolt

Bolt is either M8 (or M10 ?) Same as the bolt that you take out to get to it. You can take this out without losing any engine oil if you want to check it out.

I followed this which is for a 950 but same procedure

Re: Engine locking bolt

You can see the alignment holes/dimples in the crank through the hole in the case. If you take the spark plugs out and get an assistant to turn the engine over (14mm hex/Allen key) you can line it up by eye. It's tricky because the engine will try to "push" past because of pressure from the valve sp...

Re: Considering an SMT

My bike is fitted with (de-catted) Akras and no heat shields with the standard KTM semi hard panniers with no problems at all. Interesting theory that the cats could make a difference - makes sense.

Re: Oil jet stuck...

Kev, Now I understand :D - that makes perfect sense. I've never looked at mine when changing oil but now I see why it's so IMPORTANT . I've never had clutch or gear change issues so I'm guessing it must be working OK and be clear from blockages. I imagine you soon feel a difference if it's blocked w...

Re: Oil jet stuck...

Kev, I'm not sure anyone on here actually understands what the clutch oil jet actually does - I don't and I don't mess with anything unless I understand how it works and what it does. Comes from being an engineer I suppose (or other way round - inquisitive first , engineer second ? I've had many wet...

Re: Motorex oil really needed?

What does the clutch jet actually do ? I've had many bikes (all with wet clutches) and never seen an oil jet. I can understand that with any type of "jet" the viscosity of the oil could make a difference to its' flow but the clutch runs in an oil bath and I don't understand what the jet does/what it...

Re: Motorex oil really needed?

I've bought K&N oil filter this time after seeing the reports of KTM filters (of Chinese origin) collapsing (not sure if this is still an issue). Was disappointed to see the K&N's were made in China ! K&N have assured me the quality is carefully controlled - however I don't trust anything Chinese. K...

I've always used Motorex but this time I've bought Castrol Power 1 10W-50. The price of Motorex is a P... take !

Haven't put the Castrol in yet but it's top quality stuff, full synthetic. I can't see how it won't do the job ?

Re: RE: Re: 990 Power Commander 5 & Tune ECU custom maps

The one short stack will smoothen the low end out, the A/F ratio is mapped for each stack per cylinder. Are your 2nd flies removed? Ah ! As I thought. I'll get a short stack - for rear cylinder ? Yes 2nd flies removed but shafts left in. SAS blanked off and removed also. Akrapovic hexacone cans and...

Re: RE: Re: 990 Power Commander 5 & Tune ECU custom maps

nice clean airbox install mate. You've done a very neat job there keeping everything looking tidy. I personally prefer the power delivery with the short/long stack combination, it really smooths out the bottom end and spreads the power across the rev range. Worth a try anyway, you can buy the short...

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: 990 Power Commander 5 & Tune ECU custom maps

Nice work mate top job, if you want to see those big gains you need to install one of the foam filters to your plate, the foam opens up the top of the air box & allow the air to be pulled straight down the stacks. http://www.ktmsmt.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5531&hilit=cheap+air+box Also map #20 is c...

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: 990 Power Commander 5 & Tune ECU custom maps

:D Got my own filter kit finished and had a couple of hours on the bike 2 up yesterday. First impressions are that it's "different" ? A little smoother but no huge difference in power. I suspect my bike was always "better than avarage" anyway. I've gone from dealer fit Akrapovic to - O2 sensors off...
